Here are three relatively small beaches with thin golden sand.The one in the middle is the larger and the most popular. The southern beach is more beautiful and less crowded, while the last one is at the exit of a small stream and it is usually empty. The most recognizable feature of Kalathas is a small islet which is only 110 m from the beach and you can easily swim to it.

Lazaretta Islet

The islet of Lazaretta is located opposite Nea Chora and in the 17th century it was used by the Venetians as the leprosarium of Chania, as were the most islets of the cities of Crete. It is named after Lazarus, the patron saint of lepers from the Roman Catholic Church. They have identified graves, apparently of patients, while we can still distinguish the foundations of buildings demolished by the Turks in 1645 to place a large cannon to help attack the fort of Chania at the mouth of the port. In some places you will see metal fragments from bombs dropped during German military exercises during World War II. The island hosts a sanctuary of its own Agios Nikolaos which was built by a local in 1954.

Stavros

This beach is Stavros beach in Chania. A great site which is located in a bay and around it hills rise that protect it from the winds. However, the rocky mass that stands directly opposite the beach reminds that the film was shot there. The movie Alexis Zorbas "Zorba the Greek" of 1964, directed by Michalis Kakogiannis with Anthony Quinn, Alan Bates. The film won three Oscars, the most important being the second Oscar female role for the performance of Lila Centrova, in the role of Madame Ordnance. The music of the film which was written and composed by Mikis Theodorakis, became universally known as "syrtaki".

Seitan Limania

Seitan Limania are located on the northeast side of the peninsula Akrotiri in western Crete, 20 kilometers from the city of Chania. There, strips of sea penetrate between the steep rocky shores of Akrotiri creating small bays. The location is known as Seitan Ports or beach of Stefanos Seitan. The word Seitan is Turkish, which apparently has remained from the period of Turkish rule in Crete, and means Devil. Therefore, Seitan Limania can be translated as Devil's Ports.
