Its name comes from the Latin Garabuse and means cape outpost. One of the most famous islands of the liberation struggle from the Turkish occupation, it's also a mesmerizing sight if you're looking for a little bit of adventure.

Balos Beach

Balos Beach is located 53 km from Chania and it is formed between the Tigani peninsula and the western side of the cape of Gramvousa. One look is enough to realize that Balos is not simply a beach, but a masterpiece of nature. The white sand colors the crystal clear and shallow waters of Balos in all versions of light blue and blue and you have the opportunity to admire the steep shores of the cape of Gramvousa, to swim in the deep blue waters of Imeri Gramvousa island and visit its fortress.

Avlaki

Avlaki gorge is located, near the monastery Gouverneto, 15km east of Chania city. It is one of the most important gorges in Crete with a particular religious value, as many monks and hermits found shelter in its caves. Inside the small canyon there is the deserted Katholiko monastery, one of the oldest monasteries in Crete. Therefore, the gorge is also called Katholiko Gorge. The gorge is not accessible in all its length, but there is a paved path that starts from the Monastery Gouverneto. After 10' of walking, you will meet the Cave Arkoudiotissa with the ancient temple of Artemis. From there the trail becomes steeper and the scenery rougher. After 15 more minutes, you arrive at the abandoned monastery of Katholiko and the cave of Saint John the Hermit,who lived here. The cave is very deep (150m) and whoever wants to walk inside it must have a torch.

Macherida

The tiny beach of Macherida is located 14 km northeast of Chania and 1 km west of Chorafakia village, hidden in a rocky bay. The bay is bounded on the north by a knife-like promontory, hence and its name, surrounded by beautiful rocks. The waters here are deep and consequently clear while the currents also take care of their purity that change direction several times a day and don't let go easily garbage to approach.
